OUR NAMESAKE

D.L. "Dusty" Dickens

 

Dusty Dickens was born in 1945 in Santa Monica, California. She attended Steven Henegar College in Salt Lake City, Utah, and holds an AMA certificate in Management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She attended the Education Dynamics Institute of Real Estate and was licensed as a realtor in the State of Nevada in 1978.

 

Dusty Dickens served the district for over 30 years. Most of that time she served in the Facilities Division as director of the Demographics, Zoning and Realty Department. In that capacity, she was responsible for land acquisition programs for the 1998 ($1.5 Billion), 1994 ($30 Million), and 1988 ($16 Million) capital improvement programs. Mrs. Dickens was instrumental in recommending site locations for 200 schools. She researched and implemented current enrollment project software which has had a historical accuracy of less than 1% difference between actual and projected enrollments. She also researched and recommended acquisition of the Geographic Information System currently used by the district for data analysis.

 

Mrs. Dickens served as a facilitator for the district's Investment in Excellence Program; served as liaison to the School Name Committee; represented the school district on committees for the city of Las Vegas, city of North Las Vegas, city of Henderson, and Clark County land use and master plans.

 

She served on the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition Planning Directors' Group; facilitated activities of the Attendance Zone Advisory Commission; served as executive council representative for non-licensed personnel on the Clark County Association of School Administrators and Professional-Technical Employees (CCASAPE) and was also a negotiations team member; she was a member of the Regional Transportation Commission Regional Fixed Guide Way Steering Committee; and was a member of the Public Education Foundation Teacher Housing Initiative Task Force.

 

She served as president of AquaVision from 1994 to 1995 and as a landscape awards chairperson in 1992. This was the first landscape awards program in the Las Vegas valley. This activity was adopted and is now sponsored by the Las Vegas Valley Water Authority.
